Why an EV Fleet and How to Monitor It

Electric Vehicles have commonly been thought of as a thing of the future, but the future is now, and EV’s are becoming a popular sight everywhere! Not only are commuters favoring chargeable cars and never paying for gas again, but passenger-carrying fleets are following these trends.

Early 2021, President Biden announced his plan to replace all government vehicles with electric models.  The plan will boost the entire Electric Vehicle market. According to Rocky Mountain Institute, 81% of “local and state governments, utilities, universities, private technology companies, and delivery services” have already started the process to add electric vehicles to their fleets.

For fleets wondering why they should switch to Electric Vehicles, there are numerous reasons to begin the process. EV’s offer drastic health benefits to riders and the community they serve. Riders don’t just care about getting from A to B. They also care about their impact on the environment. When riders know their choices are helping the environment and reducing their carbon footprint, they are more likely to choose to ride mass transit.

Electric fleets also mean not having to worry about gas. Stopping to refuel takes time, and gas costs are high, along with paying employees to move the vehicle and refuel. Instead of stopping routes short to gas-up, EV’s can last longer and charge overnight, meaning transit routes can be longer and better serve riders. As battery-based electric vehicles have only a tenth of the parts of a regular engine, costs of maintenance decrease drastically.

So what’s next, and how do you make the switch? Transit agencies have to be careful to plan their transition in a way that won’t cause issues. Agencies have to adjust routes, and EV’s can go longer on a charge than a tank of gas. The only way to make the switch is to monitor data over time and see how your fleet operates. Passio offers our online cloud-based tool Passio Navigator, which can help.

As the environment of transit is constantly changing, so is Passio Technologies. We are offering a new dashboard within Passio Navigator that helps transit agencies like universities, cities, towns, and more to monitor their new electric fleets.

Our Electric Vehicle Dashboard tracks how a fleet impacts the environment, like the number of trees saved compared to if the vehicles had not been electric. The dashboard also tracks drivers and monitors their feedback on routes and electric vehicles. Now that maintenance is different, tracking it is more important than ever. Managers can view each vehicle on a live map and see when they need service and received maintenance last.

Fleet data is valuable, as it can help our clients save money by changing routes, stops, and maintaining vehicles. Clients can now understand their new fleet vehicles better than ever, allowing them to make decisions that ultimately can increase ridership and utilize resources.
