In the over 50 years that New York City’s MTA has been in existence, a woman has never headed up subway maintenance. … until now. Siu Ling Ko is a 34-year veteran of MTA’s Subway Car Equipment division and now the leader responsible for maintaining its fleet of subway cars as Vice President and Chief Mechanical Officer.

The field of transportation is historically male-dominated, and still today, 85% of the transportation workforce is male. With so few women in the industry, seeing women in leadership positions is rare. Even rarer is seeing an Asian female in a leadership position. The percentage of Asians working in transportation is only 3.3%, whereas Asians make up just over 6% of the nation’s total workforce.

In her role, Ko will oversee the maintenance and overhaul of NYC’s over seven thousand subway cars. Learn more about Ko HERE.

As leaders in transit look to overhaul and improve their fleets, adding the latest transportation technology is one of their main considerations.
